Which mattress should I choose?

The type of mattress you choose is really all down to personal preference, as you will need to choose the size, type and firmness rating which best suits you and your sleep style.

Some people prefer a soft or medium firmness, while others like a firm or extra firm mattress to provide more support.

If you are heavier in weight or you suffer from back or joint pain, then an extra firm mattress can help to distribute weight more evenly and offer pressure-relieving support while you sleep.

Some people prefer open coil mattresses or pocket sprung mattresses, whereas others prefer memory foam.

How often should you change your mattress?

You should ideally look to replace your mattress every eight to ten years.

If your mattress is damaged or saggy, making more noise than usual, or you are regularly waking up with stiffness in your joints and muscles, then you should consider replacing your mattress.

How should I dispose of my old mattress?

There are a few different ways that you can dispose of your old mattress.

If you’re buying a new mattress one from us, you have the choice to add mattress recycling to your basket, when you add your new mattress. With this service, we’ll send you out a bag to put your mattress in and collect in when you’re new mattress is delivered.

If it is still usable, you can donate it to charity. This way you get rid of your mattress while you are helping someone who is less fortunate.

The British Heart Foundation offers a free pickup service for customers who have bought a new bed from Bensons for Beds.

What size is a double mattress?

A double mattress is 135cm wide x 190cm long. This is one of our most popular mattress sizes.

What size is a king size mattress?

A king size mattress is 150cm wide x 200cm long. This is a great size if you are taller or you like to have more space when sleeping.

King size beds and mattresses are also a great focal point in a large bedroom.

What size is a single mattress?

A single mattress is 90cm x 190cm. A single mattress is a good size for children’s bedrooms guest rooms or smaller sized bedrooms.

What is an orthopaedic mattress?

Orthopaedic mattresses are usually extra firm mattresses. They help to distribute your weight and provide additional support where your body needs it most.

Orthopaedic mattresses are also popular with people who like a very firm mattress.

What is a pocket sprung mattress?

Pocket sprung mattresses have hundreds of individual metal springs which run down the width of the mattress to provide comfort and support while you sleep.

The springs in pocket sprung mattresses are each encased in their own fabric pockets for enhanced comfort. Each spring moves independently so you get the right amount of support on your pressure points.

With a pocket spring mattress, you are also less likely to be disturbed when your partner rolls over in the night – or you are less likely to disturb your partner if it is you who moves around!
