Two in every three people in Britain could benefit in some way from investing in a new bed, according to the results of a new investigation.

The Great British Sleep Study finds only 39 per cent of the population is happy with the rest they are getting each night.

One of the greatest issues plaguing people is an inability to nod off – often known as insomnia – while many others have trouble getting back to sleep after waking up in the early hours.

Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, says: “Whilst great emphasis is rightly placed on the importance of diet and exercise, sleep has for too long been neglected as a major influence on the physical and mental health of the nation.”

Lisa Shives, writing recently for the CNN blog, suggested another condition many individuals are suffering from when tucking into their bed at night is apnea, of which chronic tiredness is one of the symptoms.
