How often should you change your mattress?
Your mattress plays an essential role in your sleep cycle, and getting that right means you’ll always wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. According to experts, we should change our regular mattress every seven years to ensure the best night’s sleep.
However, there are several other indications that it could be time to change your mattress:
- It feels uncomfortable
- You wake up in the night
- You feel stiff when you wake up
- You’ve gained/lost weight or moved in a partner
It feels uncomfortable
Perhaps the most obvious sign that it’s time to change your mattress is that it feels uncomfortable when you lay down on it. If you feel your mattress has lost some of its comfort over the years, it’s a good idea to compare it to other mattresses you might spend the night on. If you’re consistently getting a better night’s sleep in the spare room or at a friend’s house, it could be time to replace your mattress.
You wake up in the night
If your mattress is so uncomfortable that you struggle to stay asleep all night long, it could be an indication that it needs to be replaced.
You feel stiff and sore when you wake up
A common side-effect of an overused mattress is stiffness and sore muscles in the morning. Usually, aches and pains caused by an uncomfortable mattress feel more intense when you first wake, and then ease off throughout the day.
You’ve gained/lost weight or moved in a partner
If you’ve lost or gained a significant amount of weight, or added a co-sleeper, you may need to replace your mattress. A change in the amount of weight you’re putting on your mattress on a nightly basis can change the way that your mattress supports you, which may result in becoming less effective.
How can I keep my mattress hygienic between changes?
It’s important to keep your mattress fresh and hygienic in between changes to avoid odors and any nasty surprises such as bed bugs. A good way to do this is by cleaning off any stains as soon as they happen using a mattress stain remover. It’s also beneficial to regularly use a mattress freshener to keep nasty odors at bay, and leave your bedroom smelling fresh.
Top Tip: Our Care and Protection Bedroom Care Kit contains a specialist mattress and pillow freshener to help keep your mattress smelling fresher for longer.
How often should I turn my mattress?
To help ensure you get the most from your mattress, we recommend turning it every 3-6 months. To do this, move any furniture out of the way and pull your mattress a few feet away from the bed frame. Then stand it up on its side and lower it back down so it’s facing the other way.
Top Tip: Always check whether your mattress is a no-turn mattress beforehand. Sleeping on the wrong side of a no-turn mattress is incredibly uncomfortable as you’ll be laying pretty much directly on the springs.
How often should I change my bedding?
To keep your entire bed looking, feeling and smelling fresh, it’s important that you change your bed sheets regularly – every 1-2 weeks is ideal.
