What does your sleeping position say about you?

When it’s time to hit the hay, everyone has their go-to sleeping position. But did you know the way you sleep says a lot about you and your personality?

Sleeping positions are often a reflection of our subconscious meaning they come to us naturally and are difficult to control – there’s no hiding how you really feel when you are asleep!

We took to Instagram to ask you about your favourite sleeping positions – and here’s what they mean.

Sleeping on your front

36% Yes

64% No

Sleeping on your front can suggest you are an introvert – perhaps you like to keep a low profile and keep things to yourself. Like a turtle with their shell, you may be more inward-looking than outward-looking and would prefer to keep things this way!

While sleeping on your front can help prevent snoring, it’s not ideal long-term as it can flatten the natural curve of spine, leading to lower back pain.

Sleep like a baby

61% Yes

39% No

Also known as the foetal position, this where you curl your knees in towards your chest – just like a baby in the womb. Many people fall asleep in this position as it offers a sense of security and familiarity. Sleeping in this position can indicate a level of vulnerability and those who find comfort in this position can be described as having a hard shell: tough on the outside but soft on the inside.

Studies show that twice as many women as men opt for this sleeping position.

Sleeping on your back

27% Yes

73% No

While not the most popular of positions, sleeping on your back can indicate a level of confidence and self-assurance – especially if you prefer to sleep naked.

It’s also one of the healthier sleeping positions as it can allow natural alignment of the spine.

Be warned though, sleeping on your back can be linked to an increased chance of snoring – not ideal if you share a bed with a partner!

Sleeping on your side

89% Yes

11% No

A combination of the back and foetal position. Sleeping on your side can suggest you like to maintain balance – both in bed and in your personal life. As the most popular sleeping position in our poll, it could suggest most of us like to live harmoniously.

Side-sleepers are also thought to be easy-going, sociable people, who are trusting of strangers and like to be part of the crowd.

Fun fact – sleeping on your left side is recommended for pregnant women as it increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta.

22% Yes

78% No

Do you like to lie on your back with your arms and legs outstretched? Then you’re a starfish.

While this is the least popular position, those who prefer to sleep like this tend to be confident and self-assured. Sleeping in such an ‘open’ position indicates you are a good communicator and like to go out of your way to help people.
