Think it’s time to buy a new pillow?
We’re no strangers to pillows, we even think there are pillows more suited for you depending on whether you prefer sleeping on your front, back or side, but we also know that pillows don’t last forever.
Natural pillows filled with feathers or down have the ability to keep you cool, dry and supported through the night. Natural filled pillows will keep their shape support for longer than synthetic pillows. Natural pillows can last up to 10 years if cared for properly.
Synthetic pillows filled with hollowfibre, microfibre or memory foam are comfortable, warm and often lighter than their natural counterparts, they’re also easier to wash. They’re great if you have allergies and will generally last between 1 & 2 years.
Although the above is a general rule to follow, there is a quick test you can do to see if your pillow may need replacing sooner.
Real Simple suggests:
Fold your pillow in half, squeezing out the air. If it doesn’t spring back to shape, you’re overdue for a new one. Otherwise, so long as they don’t smell mildewy, you only need to replace your pillows every three to five years—any longer, and they begin to lose support.
Don’t forget to plump your pillows daily which helps prevent the fillings from becoming compacted. Always give them a smell test and if you notice stains consider investing in protectors or replacing them.
