This is the first question you should be asking yourself, as the position you take up at night will play a huge part in which mattress you should choose. So, start of by establishing which position you most often find yourself sleeping in throughout the night.

If this is you, you really need to invest in a soft mattress as your sleeping position is already causing pressure on your spine, so you want your mattress to mould with your body shape and give you the support you need. In this case you might want to consider a memory foam mattress which moulds to your body but still gives you the support you need.
Sleeping on your back calls for a medium firm mattress, as this will give your lower back essential support while you slumber. You might want to consider a pocket sprung mattress, in this case each individual pocket spring works to provide your body with a personalised response.
It’s really not recommended, but some of us just can’t get enough of sleeping on our fronts. If you can’t resist, opt for a firm or extra firm mattress as it will keep you comfortable and stop you sinking into it, which would cause added pressure on your back.
What if I change positions?
Now that’s a great question. Many of us simply can’t be pigeonholed into a specific type of sleeper, as we’re restless and continually change position. If this is you, you’ll want to opt for a mattress that’s on the softer side.
But don’t just instantly assume you change position all the time, as you may predominantly sleep in one position meaning a soft mattress could be counterproductive. Try and figure out what your dominant position is – what feels most natural when you lie down? And how are you waking up?

Memory foam mattresses are an ideal choice if you suffer from back problems, as it will mould to your body, absorb your weight and relieve any pressure on your joints. It will also, as the name suggests, remember you and stay moulded to your body and sleeping position. If you suffer from allergies, you’ll be delighted to hear that memory foam mattresses are often hypoallergenic too.
The only real downside is that the material isn’t that breathable, so can prove hot during the summer months.
The right mattress for an investment
iGel mattresses are becoming increasingly popular, but they do cost a little more than your average choice. The cost is reflected in how hardwearing they are however, with the ability to stay in shape for many years.
As the name suggests they are filled with gel crystals which can be quite firm, so may be a better option for front sleepers. iGel is also extremely breathable, making them an excellent choice for temperature control.
The right mattress for couples
As a couple, if you’ve analysed your sleeping positions and your needs in terms of support, it’s unlikely you’ll both need exactly the same thing. A pocket sprung mattress is definitely a good choice here, as it will cater to you both, due to the individual small springs housed in the mattress fabric.
This means the separate springs will work with your different weights and needs. You can also make the choice from soft, medium or firm versions and they are much more breathable than both latex and memory foam. They can sometimes be heavy and difficult to turn, but there will of course be two of you.
The right mattress for the spare room
If you’re kitting out the spare room you don’t want to eat too far into your budget and you’ll also want to cater for a variety of people who’ll occasionally be using it. Open coil mattresses have one continuous wire coiled into several springs, making them a cheaper but slightly less supportive option. They are easy to turn however, ideal for flipping them over before the next guest arrives.

Mattress protectors do what they say on the tin. They protect and help keep it clean, which will ultimately prolong its life. Whether you add one to your mattress is personal preference. Mattress protectors are great for children's beds, especially at an age when nightly accidents are a regular occurance. A waterproof mattress protector can be easily removed and wiped down.
Do I need to turn my mattress?
Yes, it’s essential that you regularly turn your mattress. Remember, you made the investment according to your sleeping style and individual requirements. Not turning it may begin to impact this, as over time it will soften, gradually reducing the level of support it gives you.
How often should I turn my mattress?
