Duvet Covers: Which Way Round Should Your Duvet Actually Go?

Have you struggled while trying to figure out which way round your duvet needs to go inside its cover? You're not alone! It's a weekly nightmare for many of us when it’s time to change the bedding.

With this in mind, we decided it was high time we explore the ins and outs of duvet orientation. Here we intend to solve this most frustrating mystery as to which way round your duvet needs to be inside its cover.

Read on to learn more about how to be sure you’re putting your bedding on the right way round!

Which way round should a duvet cover be?

To kick things off let's start by clarifying which way round your duvet cover should go. The vast majority of duvet covers have an opening at one end. Duvet covers can feature buttons, zips, or even ties that are used to keep your duvet safe and snug inside. This opening is there so that you can pop your duvet inside the covers.

As a general rule, the opening of the duvet cover needs to be positioned at the bottom of your bed. This allows for easy access when inserting or removing your duvet from its covers when it's time to wash or change your bedding.

Once you've worked out which way round your duvet cover needs to be, the next logical step is to make sure that your duvet goes into its cover the right way round too. The vast majority of duvets have a designated top and bottom. The right way round is usually indicated by the duvet labels.

Does it matter which way round my duvet is inside its cover?

A person trying to navigate which way around their duvet should be inside of its covers.

Next comes the question of whether or not it matters which way round you put your duvet inside its cover? The short answer? Yes, it definitely does. And here’s why:

A standard single duvet measures 135cm x 200cm(W x L). So, when making a single bed, it’s really obvious which way round the duvet needs to go inside the cover thanks to the substantial difference in the lengths of the sides of the duvet and the lengths of the top and bottom of the duvet.

And with a standard double duvet, you can’t really go wrong. Double duvets measure 200cm x 200cm(W x L). This means it doesn’t really matter which way round your duvet goes inside its cover given that it’s the same length on the top and bottom of the duvet as the sides.

But when we get to king size duvets, the lines become more blurred. A standard king size duvet measures 230cm x220cm(W x L). You might think that this 10cm difference between the lengths of the sides and the top and bottom of the duvet might not impact how well your duvet cover fits. You’d be wrong. Putting your duvet into its cover the wrong way round can result in gaps where the covers have no duvet inside at all as well as bunching up of the duvet in other areas. Overall, your duvet won’t be as comfortable as it should be if you get this wrong.

Super king duvets aren’t as bothersome as king size ones. A standard super king duvet measures 260cm x220cm (W x L). So, with a 40cm difference between the width and length of this duvet size, figuring out which way round it needs to go should be slightly easier to do.

To ensure maximum comfort and a snug fit you’ll want to place the duvet inside the cover as its intended to be. And as every duvet manufacturer differs in terms of stitching, it’s not always obvious which way is the right way. Especially for those with a king size duvet!

How to figure out which way round your duvet needs to be

Some duvets don’t have a clearly defined top and bottom. If it’s not clear which way round your duvet needs to go, you can turn to the duvet label for clarification. The label should be placed at the foot of the bed.

Regardless of the size of your duvet, it’s label should always be positioned at the foot of the bed. So, if in doubt, look for the label!

In conclusion, when trying to decipher which way round your duvet should go inside its cover, remember these two rules of thumb:

  1. Position the opening of the duvet cover at the bottom of your bed. This enables easy access as and when needed while preventing zips, buttons, or press-studs from interfering with your sleep quality.
  2. Look for the duvet label and position this at the foot end of the bed. Basically, you want to align the label with the opening of your duvet cover.

These quick and easy tips can ensure that your bed is well-made and your duvet fits just right inside its cover.

Say goodbye to confusion created by duvets and their covers and hello to an easy-to-understand solution!
