Christmas Bedroom Decorations: Start Feeling Festive from the Moment You Open Your Eyes

Let’s be honest, as soon as Halloween is over and the shops start blasting Mariah Carey, it's basically Christmas. Some people wait until December 1st to officially start decking the halls… but for others, November is fair game.

We’re all used to decorating the lounge, putting lights in the windows, and maybe going a bit full-on with the front garden – but the bedroom often gets forgotten about. That’s where you start and end your day, and if you’re anything like me, it’s also the place you retreat to with a hot chocolate and a cheesy Christmas film. So why not go ahead and sprinkle a bit of magic in there too.

We’ve compiled a list of some cosy, charming and very festive ideas to turn your bedroom into a Christmas wonderland, because festive charm deserves to be spread around the entire house.

1. Start with your bedding: the festive foundation

Your bed is the biggest thing in the room, so swapping out your usual duvet set is the quickest and easiest way to make a big festive impact.

Go for brushed cotton or flannel – they’re super soft and keep you toasty on those frosty nights. There are so many lovely Christmas-themed sets out there, whether you want to opt for a tasteful tartan, a woodland print or an all out display full of reindeers and snowmen if you’re feeling a bit more playful and joyous.

Pair it with a chunky knit throw or faux fur blanket in deep reds, forest green, or even gold for that extra bit of luxury. Bonus points for cushions – think velvet, cable knit, or something with a cheeky Christmas slogan to spread the cheer.

2. Fairy lights: because you can never have too many

If there’s one thing that instantly makes a space feel magical, it’s fairy lights. Drape them around your headboard, hang them above your window, or twist them along a shelf.

Battery-operated ones are a fantastic choice. That way there’s no worrying about plug sockets or tripping over wires. We’d suggest going for a warm white to achieve that classic cosy glow, or even some soft coloured ones if you're feeling fun. Some people even go for curtain-style lights behind sheer fabric for a dreamy, starry-night look and feel.

And don’t forget; fairy lights aren’t just for Christmas, but they definitely feel a bit more special this time of year.

3. Bring in a mini tree

If you’ve got the space, a little tabletop tree is such a game changer. You can keep it simple with a few baubles and some fairy lights, or go full-on festive and decorate it like a mini version of your main tree, whatever suits your space and fills you with joy.

There’s something really magical about waking up to the soft glow of a Christmas tree right by your bed. And if you don’t want to deal with pine needles in your bedroom, there are plenty of lovely artificial trees now that look just as good as the real thing.

Even adding in just a few sprigs of pine or eucalyptus in a vase can help create that Christmassy scent and feel – just a little nod to the season.

4. Advent calendars that feel grown-up

Who says advent calendars are just for kids? These days, you can get some truly gorgeous ones that double as decor – think wooden houses with little drawers, fabric hangers with stitched pockets, or even DIY versions made with twine and pegs.

Hang one up on your wall or door and fill it with little treats – chocolates (obviously), but you could also add things like mini candles, tea bags, or even affirmations if you want to add a mindful twist to your mornings. Whatever will bring you joy works best.

It’s such a nice way to take a moment for yourself and count down the days, especially when you do it in your own little festive retreat.

5. Add some scents of the season

Smell is a big part of feeling festive, and filling your bedroom with warm, comforting Christmas scents is the ultimate cherry on top.

Candles are the easiest and most obvious choice – opt for scents like cinnamon, clove, orange, pine, or gingerbread. If you’re not keen on open flames hanging around (especially before bed), go for wax melts, oil diffusers or even pillow sprays.

Some brands do lovely seasonal essential oil blends that help you unwind and get into the holiday spirit. You’ll be dreaming of mince pies and mulled wine in no time.

6. Don’t forget the windows

A bit of window magic goes a long way. You could go all out with the snow-spray if you’re feeling artistic (channel your inner child and stencil some snowflakes), or just hang a festive wreath and some star decorations if that’s more your vibe.

Window decals are brilliant too – easy to put on, easy to peel off, and they come in a huge variety of cute designs. Throw some twinkly lights into the mix, and suddenly your room looks like it belongs on a Christmas movie set.

7. Swap out artwork & prints

This one might sound a bit extra, but hear us out – switching out a couple of your usual wall prints for something seasonal is such a fun touch.

There are tons of downloadable Christmas prints online (Etsy is great for this), and you can simply print them out to pop into your existing frames. You could try looking for your favourite quotes from Christmas films, snowy landscapes, or vintage-style festive ads – these will really help set the mood.

Even just one festive print on your dresser or bookshelf can make a difference.

8. Create a cosy Christmas nook

If you’ve got a bit of space to work with, set up a little festive corner. Maybe a chair or stool with a plaid throw, a stack of your favourite Christmas books, or a tray with a mini hot chocolate station.

Add a mug with candy canes, some marshmallows, and a tin of biscuits – perfect for those lazy Sunday mornings in bed watching your favourite Christmas movie (again).

It’s all about creating those little moments of joy, doing something for yourself and making your room feel like your own personal grotto.

Final thoughts: Christmas cheer starts with you

Decorating your bedroom for Christmas isn’t just about being over-the-top (unless you want to be, in which case go for it). It’s about making your space feel welcoming, joyful, and a little bit magical.

Whether you decide to go for full North Pole vibes or just add a few subtle touches, waking up in a room that feels festive is the perfect way to start your day. And let’s face it – in the chaos of December, having a peaceful little Christmas sanctuary of your own is something we all need and deserve.
