How is a Pocket Sprung Mattress Made?
If you’re anything like me, you’ll love knowing those tiny details about how things are made and yes, that includes pocket sprung mattresses. Wouldn’t it be great to know what goes into making your lovely new pocket sprung mattress and how each part is designed to give you a great night’s sleep?
There’s so much more to a pocket sprung mattress than meets the eye, and here you’ll discover what, and why, certain things are included in a mattress with pocket springs.
What are pocket springs?
Pocket springs are individually wrapped springs, encased in their own “pockets” of material. The springs are therefore independent of one another, unlike open coil springs that are joined together. This design minimises motion disturbance so that if you or your partner move in the night, you’re less likely to be affected. Pocket sprung mattresses are also great for being responsive to your movement and supplying support where it’s needed as you move across the mattress.
If motion disturbance and responsiveness are top of your list of requirements in a mattress (as they should be!), remember that the more pocket springs there are, the more support provided.
How are pocket springs different from open coil springs?
In a coiled spring mattress, a series of springs are joined together to form a framework of springs that work as one frame. Pocket spring mattresses contain individual springs, each wrapped and contained in a material.
How are the pocket springs in a pocket sprung mattress made?
The springs in a pocket spring mattress are created by tempering hot metal into coil springs – a process that ensures the springs are strong and maintain their coiled shape. These coils are then encased in their individual pockets which are usually made of polyester or cotton.
What else is in a pocket sprung mattress?
Contrary to what you may think, a pocket spring mattress can often include other elements and materials besides a pocket spring interior. Pocket sprung mattresses can also differ in design, with mattresses including a blend of mini pocket springs and full-size pocket springs, and pocket sprung mattresses with layers of memory foam, latex, and all sorts of other fibres and materials.
Pocket sprung mattresses may also include other features to help with not only supporting your body as you sleep, but to help in other areas of sleep too.
The pocket springs are placed at the centre of the mattress, usually on top of a foundation layer of base foam or other appropriate material. Comfort layers are then placed on top of the pocket springs. These layers can be latex foam, memory foam, and even natural materials like wool, cashmere and silk, as is the case with the Pure Tranquillity Mattress.

Why does a pocket sprung mattress need comfort layers?
While pocket springs help to support your body as you sleep and to help alleviate pressure, added comfort layers can accentuate these benefits. Specific comfort layers can also help keep you warm in winter, cooler in summer, and cosy all year round. These kinds of mattresses are known as temperature regulating mattresses.
