A mattress topper is a great way to add extra comfort and support to your bed. But – just like your mattress – it also collects dust, sweat, and those accidental spills over time.

Cleaning your mattress topper properly will help keep it fresh and extend its lifespan. It will also help to keep your bed smelling fresh and feeling welcoming at the end of the day. Win-win.

A step-by-step guide on how to clean your mattress topper

Here, we’ll guide you through how to clean your mattress topper step by step. Whether it’s memory foam, latex, or feather-filled, Bensons has you covered.

1. Check the care label

Before doing anything, check the manufacturer’s instructions. Some mattress toppers have specific cleaning requirements and knowing what’s safe will help to prevent any accidental damage during the process.

Note: Please only follow the below instructions if your mattress topper manufacturer hasn’t advised against any of the steps outlined.

2. Vacuum the surface

Start by vacuuming both sides of the topper with a handheld vacuum or an upholstery attachment. This helps remove dust, dead skin cells, and allergens that may have accumulated in your mattress topper over time.

3. Spot clean stains

For stains, always follow manufacturer guidance. A good home-made solution is a mix of mild detergent and warm water. Dip a clean cloth in the solution and gently blot the stain—don’t scrub, as this can damage the material. For tougher stains, try a mix of baking soda and water as this can help lift discoloration.

4. Deodorise with baking soda

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the surface of the topper and let it sit for a few hours. Baking soda absorbs odours and moisture, leaving your topper smelling fresh. Afterward, you’ll want to vacuum it all off thoroughly.

5. Air it out

If possible, take your mattress topper outside for a few hours. Fresh air and sunlight can help eliminate bacteria and odours naturally. That said, if it’s hay fever season, or we’re experiencing a bout of that typical British weather, airing out a mattress topper outdoors might not be such a great idea. Where taking it outside isn’t an option, try to place it in a well-ventilated room instead. Don’t forget to open the windows (and/or doors) wide to encourage are to circulate around your mattress topper too!

6. Deep clean if needed

For a deeper clean, some toppers (especially those with removable covers) can be machine washed. If yours is machine-washable, use a gentle cycle with mild detergent and cold water – refer to the manufacturer’s guidance wherever possible. Avoid using any harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the material.

7. Dry it properly

Allow the topper to air dry completely before putting it back on your bed. If it’s a memory foam mattress topper, avoid any direct heat (like a tumble dryer or hairdryer) as it can break down the foam. Instead, lay it flat in a well-ventilated area or near a fan.

8. Use a mattress protector

To keep your topper cleaner for longer, consider using a waterproof mattress protector. Having one will help to prevent spills, sweat, and dust from penetrating the topper, making maintenance much easier.

Mattress topper cleaning FAQs

How often should I clean my mattress topper?

It’s best to vacuum your topper every few weeks and do a deeper clean every 3-6 months, depending on usage and exposure to spills or allergens. If you have pets that like to share your bed, you may want to do a deep clean a little more frequently than this.

Can I put my mattress topper in the washing machine?

Some mattress toppers with removable covers can be machine washed, but solid memory foam or latex mattress toppers should never be put in the washing machine. If in doubt, always check the care label.

What’s the best way to remove stains from a mattress topper?

A mix of mild detergent and warm water works well for most stains. For tougher stains, try a baking soda and water paste. Always blot rather than scrub to avoid damaging the material.

How can I dry my mattress topper quickly?

Air drying in a well-ventilated room with a fan is best. Avoid direct sunlight for memory foam toppers, and never use a tumble dryer, as heat can damage the material.

How do I prevent my mattress topper from getting dirty?

Use a waterproof mattress protector to shield it from spills, sweat, and dust. Regular vacuuming and occasional airing out will also help to keep it looking, feeling and smelling fresh.
