How to Clean and Care For Your Mattress | Sleep Hub


Stains, odours and general wear and tear are inevitable over time, but with regular care and cleaning, you can help your  mattress stay fresh and last longer. Make sure you’re getting the quality sleep you need from your bed with these easy mattress care tips…

When you’re washing your bedding

Change and wash your bedding weekly to keep your sleep environment clean and fresh. While the sheets are off the bed, take five minutes to gently vacuum the mattress and bed frame using the upholstery tool on the vacuum cleaner. You’ll be surprised at how much dust and dead skin it’ll remove – but be gentle, the fabric can be delicate. This is a quick and easy way to keep your mattress hygienic, doing this regularly will help you stay on top of things. 

Top tip: To keep things fresh, let the mattress air for a while before you put your bedding back on.

Can I protect my mattress?

Keep your mattress clean with a machine washable mattress protector. It’ll prevent surface stains from settling into your mattress, so they’ll be easier to remove. Be sure to let your mattress topper dry completely before putting it back on your bed, to avoid dampness and mould. Exposure to either can lead to health problems.

How to clean a stained mattress

If you can, tackle stains on your mattress as soon as they happen. It’s possible to remove old stains, but it’s far easier when they’re new. 

What you need:

  • A bucket
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar per 1 litre warm water
  • A cheap bar of white soap
  • A microfibre cleaning cloth
  • An old toothbrush
  • A clean, dry towel

How to clean your mattress stain

1. If dealing with fresh spillages, blot up as much of the liquid as possible before cleaning. 

2. Get a bucket of hot water and add 1/4 cup of white vinegar per 1 litre. 

3. Wet the microfibre cloth and wring it out well – you don’t want to soak the mattress. 

4. Rub the soap onto the cloth. 

5. Give the stain a good scrub with the cloth. Target particularly tough stains with an old toothbrush. 

6. Rinse the cloth in the water, wring it out, and rub it over the stain again to remove the soap suds. You might need to repeat this process a few times, especially for old or heavy stains. 

7. Rub the patch with a clean, dry towel. This will soak up any moisture and surface-dry the patch.

8. Leave the mattress to air-dry completely before remaking the bed. Any dampness could cause mould.

Should I turn my mattress?

We spend around a third of our lives on our mattresses, so some general wear and sagging over time is to be expected. Turn your mattress regularly to allow for even distribution of body weight throughout its life – this should help it last longer. But go carefully! Mattresses are incredibly heavy – you’ll need a few strong bodies to avoid damage (or hurting yourself). 

When should I replace my mattress?

Over time – even with careful care and attention – your mattress will begin to age, which can have an impact on your sleep quality. If you wake up with aches and stiffness, it may be a sign that your mattress (rather than your joints) are due an upgrade. We recommend replacing your mattress around every 8 years, depending on the type and how often it’s used. This is an opportunity for you to level up the comfort of your mattress. Try out different mattress designs from pocket sprungopen coil and memory foam. If you've had your old mattress for a long time, you may find that you prefer a different type of design.
