How to Prepare a Baby for Bedtime

If you’re a new parent, you’ve probably realised that “bedtime” can sometimes feel like a military operation. One minute your baby is cooing and content, and the next, they’re red-faced and roaring because you dared to think about sleep. Don’t worry – you’re not alone.

Here at Bensons for Beds, we know that a good night’s sleep starts before anyone actually gets into bed – especially for the littlest members of the family. So, we’ve put together some gentle tips to help you get your baby ready for a peaceful night.

1. Set a routine (and stick to it!)

Babies thrive on routine. Doing the same things, in the same order, at roughly the same time each evening helps signal that bedtime is coming. Think bath, story, feed, cuddles, bed. You don’t need to be military-precise, but consistency is your best friend here.

Top tip: Try to wind things down around the same time each night. Over-tired babies are much harder to settle.

2. Create a calm sleep environment

Your baby’s sleep space should be quiet, dark (or dimly lit), and comfortably cool – around 16–20°C is perfect. Invest in blackout blinds if you can (especially for those bright summer evenings here in the UK), and consider using white noise to mask household sounds.

3. Bath time = wind down time

A warm bath can work wonders when it comes to relaxing your baby and signalling that bedtime is approaching. Keep it short and sweet – just five to ten minutes is enough. Bonus points if you add a little baby massage afterwards. Lavender-scented lotion is optional but a great scent for helping baby to relax and prepare for bedtime too. Though if your baby has sensitive skin that’s prone to irritation, lighting a lavender scented candle in their bedroom can have the same soothing effect.

4. Snuggly, not sweaty

Dress your baby in soft, breathable sleepwear that’s appropriate for the current season. A sleeping bag (aka baby sleep sack) can help keep them cosy without the need for loose blankets. Always check their chest or back to make sure they’re not too hot or cold. Just like us, babies can suffer sleep disturbances in the night if their body temperature isn’t quite right.

5. Feed, cuddle, and settle

Whether your baby’s breastfed or bottle-fed, a final feed before bed can help to settle them down for the night. After they’ve finished feeding, try a few gentle cuddles or a lullaby – keep the lights low and your voice calm. The vibe should be zen parent energy, even if you’re running on caffeine and hope. If you’re feeling anxious or stressed out, your baby will pick up on your own negative energy and may mirror it back to you.

6. Put them down sleepy, not fully asleep

This one’s a bit of a game-changer. Try putting your baby down when they’re drowsy but still awake – it helps them learn to fall asleep on their own, which means fewer wake-up calls for you later. We know, easier said than done, but it’s worth practising.

A final word

Some nights will run smoothly, others… not so much. And that’s okay. Baby sleep can be unpredictable, but a consistent, calming bedtime routine really does help. Stick with it, take turns with your partner whenever you can, and don’t forget to treat yourself once your baby is finally down and settled. Everyone needs a reward for a job well done, whether it’s a warm bubble bath, a quiet half an hour to read your book, or a warm drink before bed.

Sweet dreams, little one – and fingers crossed for an uninterrupted night!
