What types of mattresses are there?
Each mattress has its own size, type and firmness rating, so it’s important to choose the right mattress for you. Small single mattresses are ideal for children and guests while super king size mattresses allow additional room for singles and couples alike. In the middle, our most common mattress sizes are double and king size.
Once you’ve picked a size, you need to decide a mattress type. Here’s some of the most popular ones:
Open coil mattresses are affordable and versatile and come with metal springs that run down the width of the mattress for comfort. Pocket sprung mattresses are similar to open coil but come with fabric-encased springs for enhanced comfort and no ‘roll together’.
If you suffer with back pain or arthritis, memory foam mattresses are ideal as they offer pressure-relieving support. Need something extra firm? Orthopaedic mattresses help distribute your weight and provide additional support where you need it most. Medical foam mattresses are temperature-regulating, helping you keep cool and comfortable all night long.
Rolled up mattresses come vacuum-packed in a cylinder shape, making them easily transportable. They come in different fillings including memory foam and pocket sprung and are just as comfortable as standard mattresses.

What are the best mattress brands?
We have a host of renowned mattress brands including Sensaform, Slumberland and Rollo, as well as Sealy and Silentnight.
Made exclusively for Bensons for Beds, Slumberland is the culmination of over 100 years of luxury mattress making. Today, they’re known for their eco-credentials, following the launch of a mattress range that incorporates recycled plastic bottles and carbon neutral packaging.
Sensaform are another Bensons for Beds brand to be awarded the prestigious BSI Kitemark. Their range of premium mattresses come with copper infused fibres to help energise joints and muscles and keep your sleep surface fresh and clean.
Which firmness mattress should I choose?
The right firmness rating depends on your weight, shape and personal preference. Afterall, some people like the cosy cushioning of a soft mattress while others prefer something firm. To help you make an informed choice, all our mattresses employ a Firmness Rating System, with 1 being the softest and being the firmest. You’ll find the majority of our mattresses to be in the 3 – 4 range, as most people prefer a medium mattress.
If you are on the heavier side or have back pain, an extra firm (5) or orthopaedic mattress is recommended as it helps distribute weight and offers pressure-relieving support.
Still not sure which mattress to choose? You can always come in store and try SleepPro, our exclusive sleep technology which analyses your sleeping position. SleepPro works by testing different firmness ratings and creating a personalised sleep profile, so you can find the right mattress for you.
