From ZZZ to Zoom: 7 Steps for Transforming Your Bedroom into a Hybrid Work/Sleep Space

For some of us, keeping our sleep- and work-spaces completely separate isn’t an option. Those living in shared accommodation or open-plan homes might find it difficult to delegate space for each of these essential life elements. Add to that that modern homes seem to get smaller and smaller and the option for a fully-fledged at-home office set up in a dedicated room of its own seems out of reach for many.

So, how can we create a cohesive sleep-come-work space? Is it possible to have two purposes for one room without working disrupting sleep and vice-versa? The experts may tell you that a combined space is not conducive to either purpose. But, when you’ve no other option, finding a way to make it work is a must.

And so, here are our top tips for optimising your bedroom for both work and sleep.

Step 1: Find the perfect productivity spot

Okay, let's kick off this bedroom makeover with a little space transformation magic! First things first, pick that perfect nook in your bedroom where you can channel your inner productivity guru. Think comfort, think focus. If you can, snag a spot with a view – natural light isn't just for Instagram influencers; it does wonders for your mood and keeps those alert vibes flowing.

Now, in the grand game of avoiding distractions, consider the layout of your bedroom. Corners or alcoves are like the VIP section for concentration. If you're on the space-strapped side, think about wall-mounted desks or those fold-out wonders that vanish into thin air when you're done.

To officially mark your territory, grab a desk or table dedicated to all things work. Throw in a chair that's the Beyoncé of comfort – excellent posture, good on their feet, an excellent singer…?Think more Lay-Z than Jay-Z though…

Step 2: Get organised

An untidy desk littered with sticky notes, screwed up paper, and general work related paraphernalia

Now that you've staked your claim, let's talk ergonomic essentials. Your throne (a.k.a., chair) and command centre (the desk) are VIPs in the comfort game. A chair with good lumbar support is like a back massage during every Zoom call, and an adjustable desk is the multitasking superhero your workday deserves.

Enter the organisation superheroes – desk organisers. They range from the 'I'm just here for your pens' type to the 'I can handle your entire office supply stash' multitiered champs. A tidy space equals a zen mind, and that's just science.

Oh, and let's not forget the little comforts that make a big difference – a padded mousepad, a wrist rest – because your hands need love too during those epic typing marathons.

Step 3: Personalise your space

Wait, it's not all about work? Bring in the personal touch! Spice up your workspace with things that scream 'you.' Artwork, framed photos, or that quirky item you picked up on your last adventure – make your workspace a reflection of your fabulous self.

Plants are your new green co-workers. They not only bring nature indoors but also jazz up the air quality. Low-maintenance ones, though – we're not running a jungle in here.

Choose colours and textures that make your heart sing. Whether it's the colour of your stapler or the feel of your chair, make sure it's a vibe that makes you go all 2008, and exclaim "Ah, this is MY space." Ba-dum-tish…

Step 4: Consider lighting for all scenarios

Lighting is another key thing to consider when designing a bedroom/office space. When it comes to productivity, lighting can make the world of difference. As your bedroom will be functioning as both a sleep space and a workspace, you’ll need a range of lighting options delivery ambient, task-focussed, and natural lights. Ceiling lights are very much the main character as they’ll be concentric to all the bedroom goings on. Task lighting? Imagine this as a spotlight you can turn too when you need some extra work focus. And natural light? Well, that's just your recommended daily dose of vitamin D. But it’s equally important to make the most of natural light so setting your desk beside a window that allows natural light to flood your bedroom is ideal.

Pro tip: Warm-toned bulbs are the secret sauce for a cosy atmosphere that boosts focus and concentration. Let there be light!

Step 5: Storage, storage, storage!

Now, let's tackle the beast known as clutter. Organisational tools and storage solutions are your knight in shining armour. Cable management solutions? They're the Jedi masters, turning the cable chaos into a sleek masterpiece.

Maximise storage with under-bed storage or furniture with secret compartments. A tidy space not only makes you more productive but also gives off those 'I have my life together' vibes. We have an amazing range of divans and ottoman bed bases, offering just that! We even have an electrically powered ottoman base! The future has arrived.

Regular decluttering sessions? Think of these as mini adventures where you rescue your desk from the clutches of chaos.

Step 6: Get the work-life balance just right

Scrabble tiles on a desk spelling out the words: family, life, work, and carer. This symbolises the way in which these separate worlds intertwine with each other.

Maintaining work-life balance is as crucial as knowing when to hit the 'snooze' button (and when not to!). Use bedroom furniture to divide your space or throw up some stylish curtains to help you draw that all-important line between work and relaxation. And speaking of lines, it wouldn’t hurt to create a routine that screams, "Workday: activated" and "Relax mode: engaged." Boundaries, baby! Announcing the end of the workday with flair is so much more than routine; it allows us to psychologically transition from action stations into that much needed relaxation headspace at the end of a workday.

Step 7: Don't forget about those tech essentials

Ah, the tech side of things. A stable internet connection is your superhero cape. Quality headset and webcam? The dynamic duo for virtual meetings. Cable management? Your digital Marie Kondo. External monitors and accessories? These are your essential sidekicks for productivity.

And don't forget to sprinkle some personality onto your tech devices – wallpapers, screensavers, the whole shebang. Because even your computer deserves a touch of fabulous.

Now that you’ve embarked on your own personal journey to conquer your work and sleep space with style, comfort, and more than a dash of your enigmatic personality, all that’s left is to try it on for size. Remember, your bedroom isn't just a place for work tasks; it's also a creative outlet, a productive zone, and a sleep sanctuary you can retreat to at the end of the day too.
