How to Get Out of Bed in the Morning

Your alarm goes off, and you’re snuggled up in your duvet cocoon, convinced that getting up is physically impossible. We’ve all been there. Outside your bed feels cold and dark. Inside your bed? Bliss.

But sadly, unless you're living the full duvet day dream, life requires us to actually get up and out of bed. The good news? There are ways to make mornings less painful. Here at Bensons, we’re all about quality sleep – but we’ve also picked up a few tips for making the leap from bed to world a little easier.

Scroll on to learn how to get out of bed in the morning a little more easily.

1. Put your alarm across the room

This simple life hack may be slightly brutal, but it works. If your phone or alarm clock is within arm’s reach, you’ll hit snooze. Again. And again. Move it across the room so that you have to physically get up and out of bed to turn it off. The first few seconds are bound to be a bit tortuous, but once you’re vertical, you’re halfway there.

Top tip: Pick a non-terrifying alarm tone. You want motivation, not a heart attack.

2. Let in the light

Your body clock loves light – it’s how it knows it’s time to wake up. If it’s light outside, open your curtains as soon as you wake up. If it’s still dark (hello, UK winters), a sunrise alarm clock or bedside lamp can work wonders. Light tells your brain that it’s time to wake up and start your day.

3. Have something to look forward to

Whether it’s listening to an episode of your favourite podcast, a cup of really good coffee, or five quiet minutes before the chaos begins – having a tiny morning treat to look forward to when you wake up can make a lot of difference.

4. Avoid scrolling right away

Reaching for your phone first thing and falling into a social media black hole? We've all done it. But those 20 “just-checking-my-notifications” minutes are usually not that relaxing, and they definitely don’t make it easier to get up and out of bed.

Try leaving your phone in another room or switching to airplane mode overnight. Your sleep will definitely thank you for it.

5. Get moving

We’re not suggesting that all of a sudden, you take on a mammoth 10k run at 6am (unless that’s your thing), but a few simple stretches, some yoga poses, or even just walking to the kitchen for water can help shake off the sleep fog. Motion = momentum.

6. Go to bed earlier

If you find getting out of bed difficult on a daily basis, the chances are you’re just not getting enough sleep. We hate to sound like your mum, but getting to bed 30–60 minutes earlier could be really make a difference to how you feel in the morning. And with one of our mattresses, slipping into bed early won’t feel like a chore – it’ll feel like a reward.

7. Be kind to yourself

Not every morning is going to be a win. Some days, the snooze button is inevitably going to win. That’s just life. Be gentle with yourself and do what you can – tomorrow’s another chance to try again (preferably after a solid night’s sleep).
